چکیده

We introduce a model combining Kerr nonlinearity with a periodically changing sign (“nonlinearity management”) and a Bragg grating (BG). The main result, obtained by means of systematic simulations, is presented in the form of a soliton’s stability diagram on the parameter plane of the model; the diagram turns out to be a universal one, as it practically does not depend on the soliton’s power. Moreover, simulations of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model subjected to the same “nonlinearity management” demonstrate that the same diagram determines the stability of the NLS solitons, unless they are very narrow. The stability region of very narrow NLS solitons is much smaller, and soliton splitting is readily observed in that case. The universal diagram shows that a minimum non-zero average value of Kerr coefficient is necessary for the existence of stable solitons. Interactions between identical solitons with an initial phase difference between them are simulated too in the BG model, resulting in generation of stable moving solitons. A strong spontaneous symmetry breaking is observed in the case when in-phase solitons pass through each other due to attraction between them. PACS: 42.81.Dp, 42.65.Tg, 42.81.Qb

Optically induced photovoltaic self-defocusing-to-self-focusing transition.

We show theoretically and experimentally that the photovoltaic nonlinearity that gives rise to spatial solitons can be switched from self-defocusing to self-focusing (or vice versa) by use of background illumination. This raises the possibility of bright photovoltaic solitons in LiNbO(3) .

Stable Vortex Solitons and Robust Soliton Complexes in Optical Media with Competing Nonlinearities

An overview of recent results in the field of vortex (spinning) solitons and soliton complexes composed of several fundamental (nonspinning) solitons in twoand three-dimensional optical media with competing nonlinearities is presented. It is concluded that multidimensional solitons with intrinsic topological charge are stable provided that their internal size and power (energy) are large enough...

Self-focusing and Transverse Instabilities of Solitary Waves

We give an overview of the basic physical concepts and analytical methods for investigating the symmetrybreaking instabilities of solitary waves. We discuss self-focusing of spatial optical solitons in di!ractive nonlinear media due to either transverse (one more unbounded spatial dimension) or modulational (induced by temporal wave dispersion) instabilities, in the framework of the cubic nonli...

Do solitonlike self-similar waves exist in nonlinear optical media?

We show analytically that bright and dark spatial self-similar waves can propagate in graded-index amplifiers exhibiting self-focusing or self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearities. The intensity profiles of the novel waves are identical with those of fundamental bright or dark spatial solitons supported by homogeneous passive waveguides with the same type of nonlinearity. Thus, we reveal a previously...

Saddle solitons: a balance between bi-diffraction and hybrid nonlinearity.

We demonstrate self-trapping of light by simultaneously compensating normal and anomalous (saddle-shaped) diffractions with self-focusing and self-defocusing hybrid nonlinearity in optically induced ionic-type photonic lattices. Innovative two-dimensional gap solitons, named "saddle solitons," are established, whose phase and spectrum characteristics are different from all previously observed s...
